Peterson, Oscar

Peterson, Oscar (Emmanuel) (1925–2007)

Canadian jazz musician. A virtuoso pianist, he won immediate acclaim upon his US debut at Carnegie Hall in 1949. He was then a regular attraction of ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’ as well as a prolific recording artist and accompanist to other mainstream jazz figures. His albums include Affinity (1963) and Canadiana Suite (1964).

He was born in Montréal, Canada, to West Indian immigrants. In 1953 he formed the Oscar Peterson Trio. Over the course of his career, he earned seven Grammy awards and a BBC Radio Lifetime Achievement Award.
