Petrokrepost

Town in the Leningrad oblast (region) of the northwestern Russian Federation; population (1990) 12,600. Petrokrepost is situated where the River Neva flows out of Lake Ladoga, 60 km/37 mi northwest of St Petersburg.

Petrokrepost was founded in 1323 by Novgorodians, and from 1611 to 1702 was Swedish; in 1702 it was captured by Russian troops and renamed Schlüsselburg (German ‘key-fortress’) by Peter (I) the Great. The fortress in the town was used from the 18th century as a political prison.
