Petrópolis

Hill resort and former imperial city in Rio de Janeiro federal unit (state), southeast Brazil, 50 km/31 mi northeast of Rio de Janeiro city; population (1991) 255,200. Industries include textiles, fruit and vegetable cultivation, and brewing. It was founded in 1843 by Dom Pedro II (Emperor of Brazil 1831–89) as the seat of his government during the summer months; the Imperial Palace is now a museum and contains the Brazilian Crown Jewels. The cathedral (completed in 1925) contains the Emperor's tomb.
