Pettigo

Pettigo

Town in County Donegal, Republic of Ireland, 27 km/17 mi east of Ballyshannon; population (2002) 275. Pettigo is a centre for Lough Derg, 8 km/5 mi north. The River Termon which flows through the town forms the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.

Termon MacGrath Castle 2 km/1 mi south of Pettigo was built in the 16th century. Templecarne graveyard 5 km/3 mi north of Pettigo has a ringed cross and a bothog (Mass shelter) used during the penal times 1695-1727 when practising the Catholic religion was forbidden by law.

South of Pettigo in Aghnaboo is the home of John Kells Ingram (1823-1907), who wrote the ballad ‘Who Fears to Speak of '98’.
