Pevsner, Nikolaus Bernhard Leon (1902–1983)

Anglo-German art historian. Born in Leipzig, he fled from the Nazis to England. He became an authority on architecture, especially English. His Outline of European Architecture was published in 1942, followed by numerous other editions. In his series The Buildings of England (46 volumes; 1951–74), he built up a first-hand report on every notable building in the country.

Pevsner was assistant keeper at the Dresden Gallery (1924–28); lecturer at Gottingen University (1929–33); Slade Professor of Fine Art at Cambridge (1949–55); and Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at Birkbeck College, London. His many publications include The Baroque Architecture of Leipzig (1928), Pioneers of the Modern Movement (1936), and Sources of Modern Art (1962).
