Phaéton

Opera by Jean-Baptiste Lully (libretto by Philippe Quinault), produced at Versailles on 9 January 1683 and first performed at Paris on 27 April of that same year. The story concerns Phaëton, who abandons his love Théone and wants Princess Libya. He rides recklessly around the sky in a chariot until Jupiter strikes him down with a thunderbolt.

Symphonic poem by Camille Saint-Saëns, first performed at Paris on 7 December 1873.
