Phaedra

In Greek mythology, a Cretan, daughter of Minos and Pasiphae, married to Theseus of Athens. Her adulterous passion for her stepson, Hippolytus, led to her death. The story is told in plays by Euripides, Seneca, and Racine.

Phaedra

Dramatic cantata for mezzo-soprano and orchestra by Benjamin Britten (text by R Lowell, after Racine's Phèdre). Composed in 1975, it was first performed at Aldeburgh, on 16 June 1976, with the English mezzo-soprano Janet Baker.
