Phaestos

Ancient city in Crete, 40 km/25 mi southwest of Candia. Excavations have revealed remains of a magnificent palace dating from about 1875 BC, two palaces dating from 800 BC, and a smaller palace at Hagia Triada 3 km/2 mi away. A baked clay disc (the Phaistos Disc) was found in the palace in 1908. It is inscribed with a spiral text in pictorial signs which still defies translation.
