Phalaborwa

Town in North West province, South Africa, founded in 1957 and built to house employees of the Phosphate Development Corporation; population (district, 1991) 30,100. Phosphate output covers most of South Africa's needs. Since 1965, copper, iron ore, and vermiculite have been mined by the Phalaborwa Mining Company.
