phalarope

Any of a genus Phalaropus of small, elegant shorebirds in the sandpiper family (Scolopacidae). They have the habit of spinning in the water to stir up insect larvae. They are native to North America, the UK, and the polar regions of Europe.

The male phalarope is courted by the female and hatches the eggs. The female is always larger and more colourful.

The red-necked phalarope P. lobatus, gray P. fulicarius, and Wilson's phalarope P. tricolor can be found in North America.
