Pheidippides

Athenian messenger, sent to Sparta 490 BC to announce the Persian landing at Marathon and request help. He allegedly reached Sparta on the second day after leaving Athens, having covered about 240 km/150 mi. After the Battle of Marathon 490 he is also reputed to have set out for Athens with news of the Greek victory, but collapsed and died on arrival. His feat is commemorated by the modern marathon race over the distance from Marathon to Athens.
