Philip IV the Fair (1268–1314)King of France from 1285. He engaged in a feud with Pope Boniface VIII and made him a prisoner 1303. Clement V (1264–1314), elected pope through Philip's influence in 1305, moved the papal seat to Avignon in 1309 and collaborated with Philip to suppress the Templars, a powerful order of knights.
