Philippi

Ancient city of Macedonia founded by Philip of Macedon in 358 BC. Near Philippi, Mark Antony and Augustus defeated Brutus and Cassius in 42 BC, and the Roman colony was established. St Paul addressed a New Testament letter to the church in the city.

Philippi

Seat of Barbour County, northeast West Virginia, USA, on the Tygart River, 31 km/19 mi southeast of Clarksburg; population (1990) 3,100. Alderson-Broaddus College was established here in 1871, and Tygart Lake State Park lies immediately to the north. Philippi is reputedly the site of the first land battle of the American Civil War, fought on 3 June 1861; Confederate forces retreated so quickly that the engagement is known as the Philippi Races.
