Philosophes

The leading intellectuals of pre-revolutionary 18th-century France, including Condorcet, Diderot, J J Rousseau, and Voltaire. Their role in furthering the principles of the Enlightenment and extolling the power of human reason made them question the structures of the ancien régime, and they were held responsible by some for influencing the revolutionaries of 1789.
