Phoenixville

Borough of Chester County, southeastern Pennsylvania, USA, on the Schuylkill River, 39 km/24 mi northwest of Philadelphia; population (1990) 15,100. Its principal industrial products are steel, vehicle parts, abrasives, rubber goods, clothing, and felt. Educational facilities include Valley Forge Christian College (1938).

Phoenixville was settled by German immigrants around 1720; English colonists followed later. Its steel industry was established by 1785. A monument to the American Revolution marks the westernmost point of British penetration into Pennsylvania in 1877.
