Phryxes

    0.06 sec.

Phryxes

In Greek mythology, son of Athamas, king of Thessaly, and brother of Helle. He and Helle fled from their stepmother Ino on a golden-fleeced ram, the gift of Hermes.

On arriving in Colchis, Phryxes sacrificed the ram to Zeus and gave its golden fleece to King Aetes, whose daughter he married. The king fastened the fleece to an oak tree in the grove of Ares, where it was guarded by a dragon.

On the way to Colchis, Helle fell into the sea between Sigeum and the Thracian Chersonese, which was called after her ‘Hellespont’.
