Piave

River of northern Italy; length 220 km/137 mi. Rising in the Carnic Alps close to the Austrian border, it flows southwest through the Cadore district, past Belluno, and turns southeast out across the northern plain to the Adriatic coast, 35 km/22 mi northeast of Venice. During World War I the Piave formed a front between Italian and Austrian forces (see Piave, Battles of the).
