Piazza Armerina

Town in central Sicily, 22 km/14 mi southeast of Enna, built almost 760 m/2,438 ft above sea level; population (1991) 22,400. There is a wool industry and a trade in wine and olive oil. It has an ancient castle, a Norman church, and a 17th-century cathedral. To the southwest of the town is the Roman villa of Casale (excavated in 1929), with mosaic floors similar in style to Roman mosaic pavements found in North Africa.
