Picenum

Ancient district of Italy, between the Appenines and the Adriatic. The chief town of Picenum was Asculum, where the Social War between Rome and its Italian allies started 91 BC.

The emperor Augustus made Picenum the fifth regio (administrative district) of Italy. The district was enlarged by the emperor Constantine the Great to include the northeastern part of Umbria, which had been known since the late 2nd century AD as Flaminia.
