Pichl, Wenzel (1741–1805)

Bohemian violinist and composer. He was admired by Luigi Cherubini and Adalbert Gyrowetz, and Haydn performed his quartets at Eszterháza.

He studied in Prague and in 1765 became violinist and vice-director of music (under Karl Dittersdorf) to the Bishop of Grosswardein. In 1769 he moved to Vienna and thence to Milan in the service of the Archduke Ferdinand, remaining in Italy until his return to Vienna in 1796.

Opera

according to Pichl's own catalogue, 12 operas, including 4 Latin operas (1765–76), 4 opera buffa, Der Krieg (1776), and Italian arrangements of French operas.

Orchestral and chamber music

over 30 Masses; 89 symphonies; about 30 concertos; 172 quartets, 21 quintets, and other pieces; 148 pieces for baryton (euphonium).
