Pickering

Market town in North Yorkshire, England, 40 km/25 mi northeast of York; population (2001) 6,850. Agricultural produce is traded here and agricultural instruments are made. The town has a 14th-century church, and a castle in which Richard II was imprisoned.

Pickering

Town in Durham Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, Canada, on Lake Ontario, 29 km/18 mi northeast of downtown Toronto; population (1991) 68,600. A two-unit nuclear power station is situated on the lake. Like Ajax to the east, which has absorbed Pickering Village, the town is a rapidly expanding residential suburb.
