Pieria

Department of Macedonia, northern Greece; area 1,548 sq km/598 sq mi. Pieria is a thickly forested mountainous region, bounded on the east by the north Aegean Sea. The capital is Kateríni (population (1991) 39,900), situated southwest of Salonika. Tourism is a growing industry.

In mythology the coastal plain of Pieria, in the southeast of the region, was the birthplace of the Muses.
