| Town and capital of Northern Province, South Africa, 300 km/186 mi northeast of Pretoria; population (2001) 508,300. The town is an agricultural and mining centre. In the late 1990s there were plans by ISCOR, the state-owned steel company, to increase local iron ore production. |
