Pinerolo

Town in Piedmont region, northern Italy, in the Chisone valley, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Turin; population (1993 est) 35,400. During the 14th century Pinerolo was the most important town in Piedmont. The cathedral is partly 11th-century; there is a citadel where the 17th-century French politician Nicolas Fouquet and the Man in the Iron Mask (a French political prisoner who died in the Bastille in 1703) were imprisoned.
