Pilot Mountain

Rock formation in the Piedmont, USA, 737 m/2,415 ft high, rising above the town of Pilot Mountain, 37 km/23 mi northwest of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This quartzite monadnock, an isolated steep-sided protrusion resistant to glacial and other erosion, is a long-established landmark. Both Pilot Mountain. and Hanging Rock, 21 km/13 mi to the northeast, are remnants of the ancient Sauratown Mountains. Other peaks in North Carolina also bear the name Pilot Mountain.
