Pine Mountain

Town in Harris County, western Georgia, USA, 47 km/29 mi northeast of Columbus; population (1990 est) 900. It is named after Pine Mountain, a 14 km/9 mi-long ridge that rises up to 122 m/400 ft above its surroundings. Callaway Gardens, celebrated for their azaleas and butterfly centre, extend over 1,012 ha/2,500 ac to the south of the town. The 4,050-ha/10,000-ac Franklin D Roosevelt State Park lies 8 km/5 mi to the southeast.

Pine Mountain

Ridge in the Cumberland Plateau, USA, lying mostly in southeastern Kentucky, parallel with the Virginia border, and extending into Tennesee. Created by erosion, it runs for a distance of about 200 km/125 mi, and rises to above 915 m/3,000 ft in the northeastern section around Pound Gap, near Jenkins, Kentucky. Pine Mountain State Resort Park, established in 1924 and Kentucky's first state park, overlooks the Kentucky Ridge State Forest near Pineville, where the Cumberland River cuts through the ridge at the Narrows.
