Pinehurst

Town in Moore County, southern-central North Carolina, USA, in the Sandhills, 5 km/3 mi southwest of Southern Pines and 45 km/28 mi northwest of Fayetteville; population (1990) 5,100. It was founded in 1895 and developed as a resort, laid out partly by the 19th-century landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted. A noted golfing centre, it contains dozens of golf courses and the PGA World Golf Hall of Fame.
