Pineville

Town in Rapides Parish, central Louisiana, USA, on the east bank of the Red River, opposite Alexandria; population (1990) 12,300. It is a distribution centre for local timber, farm produce, and livestock, and has fishing and wood-based industries, and stoneworks. Educational facilties include Louisiana College (1906). The town was settled in the early 18th century, and was burned in 1864 during Union operations in the Civil War.

Pineville

Town in Mecklenburg County, southern North Carolina, USA, 18 km/11 mi southwest of central Charlotte; population (1990) 3,000. Originally a rural settlement, it now lies within Charlotte's suburban area. James K Polk, 11th president of the USA, was born here in 1795.
