Piombino

Town and main port of Tuscany region, north-central Italy, situated on a peninsula in the Ligurian Sea, the nearest mainland point to the island of Elba; population (1991 est) 36,500. It is 161 km/100 mi from Florence. There are iron and steel industries, using ore from the mines of Elba.

The ancient port of Falesia in the town can be traced back to the 5th century, and remains the main port of Tuscany. Piombino was formerly the capital of a principality that flourished from the 14th to 16th centuries, in what is now Livorno province. It became a principality itself in 1589. Emperor of the French, Napoleon I, gave the town to his sister Eliza in 1805.

Nearby are the remains of ancient Populonia. Other features include an aquarium and observatory.

Because I was arrested at Piombino, and I presume that, like Milan and Florence, Piombino has become the capital of some French department.
The king, however, having acquired Lombardy, regained at once the authority which Charles had lost: Genoa yielded; the Florentines became his friends; the Marquess of Mantua, the Duke of Ferrara, the Bentivogli, my lady of Forli, the Lords of Faenza, of Pesaro, of Rimini, of Camerino, of Piombino, the Lucchese, the Pisans, the Sienese--everybody made advances to him to become his friend.
