Pirame et Thisbé

Opera by Rebel and Francœur (libretto by J L I de La Serre), produced at the Opéra, Paris, on 17 October 1726. The story begins as Pyramus and Thisbe decide to run away together. Thisbe arrives at the rendezvous first but runs away when she sees a wounded lion. Pyramus arrives and, seeing the blood, believes Thisbe has been eaten. He stabs himself; she returns to find him and does likewise.
