Piran

Seaport on the most westerly point in Slovenia, on a promontory on the south side of the Gulf of Trieste, 72 km/45 mi northwest of Rijeka; population (1991 est) 4,700. Piran is the administrative centre of the locality. Industries include olive production, vineyards, horticulture, agri-business, and tourism.

Piran's city statutes were set in 1274 and it initially developed as an important salt-producing location. Fishing was also a major part of the local economy. The city was fortified in the 7th century and the walls were strengthened in the 16th century to protect against raids from Turkey.

Features include the Piran civic museum and Piran maritime museum.
