Pirmasens

City in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, 45 km/28 mi east of Saarbrücken; population (1995) 48,500. It is the centre of the German boot- and shoe-manufacturing industry.

The city dates from the 8th century, but because of heavy bombing in World War II, there remain few historic buildings.
