Pisk, Paul A

Pisk, Paul A(madeus) (1893–1990)

Austrian-born US musicologist and composer. He edited early music including Masses by Jacobus Gallus, and wrote on modern music and the Second Viennese School.

He studied under Adler at Vienna University and composition with Schreker and Schoenberg. After conducting at various German theatres, he returned to Vienna, conducting and broadcasting, and became director of the music department of the Volkshochschule, but left for the USA in 1936 and became professor of musicology at the University of Texas. In 1963, he joined the staff of Washington University, St Louis; he retired in 1973 and moved to Los Angeles.

the monodrama Schattenseite (1931); ballet Der grosse Regenmacher (1927); cantata Die neue Stadt (1926).

Orchestral

Requiem for baritone and orchestra; partita for orchestra, suite for small orchestra; Bucolic Suite for strings; and other orchestral works.

Chamber

string quartet and other chamber music; piano music; songs with organ.
