Pismo Beach

Town in San Luis Obispo County, southwestern California, USA, on the Pacific Ocean and El Camino Real, 16 km/10 mi south of San Luis Obispo and adjacent to the west of Grover City; population (1990) 7,700. Situated near oil and natural gas fields, it has a notable beach and extensive sand dunes. Tourism, mixed agriculture, and fishing are the main economic activities. The Pismo clam, named after the beach and found along the southern California coast, is now much reduced in numbers, and clamming is limited.
