Pistocchi, Francesco (Antonio Mamiliano) (1659–1726)

Italian singer and composer. He had a successful career as a contralto singer in operas. In later life he became a priest and taught singing.

Pistochi's family moved to Bologna in 1661, where he began to compose at a very early age. He entered San Petronio as a choirboy in 1670, and in 1675 began to appear in opera. In 1679, his first opera, for puppets, Il Leandro (Gli amori fatali), was produced at Venice. In 1687–94 he was a singer at the ducal court of Parma, and he then became music director to the Margrave of Ansbach, returning to Bologna in 1701, founding a singing-school there.
