Pistoia

Town in Tuscany, Italy, 34 km/21 mi northwest of Florence; population (2001) 84,300. Industries include railway engineering, weaving, and the production of steel, small arms, paper, leather, cement, bedding, pasta, and olive oil. Pistoia was the site of the Roman rebel Catiline's defeat in 62 BC. It is surrounded by walls (1302) and has a 12th-century cathedral.

The older, walled part of the town stands on a ridge of the Apennines. During the Middle Ages it was an important town, especially for banking, and it became part of the domain of the Medicis in 1530. The cathedral has a 12th–13th-century campanile (bell-tower), and contains a 13th-century silver altar. The octagonal baptistry was designed by Andrea Pisano. On the facade of the medieval Ceppo Hospital there is an early 16th-century terracotta frieze by Giovanni della Robbia.
