Pittsylvania County

County of southern Virginia, USA; area 2,577 sq km/995 sq mi; population (1990) 55,700. Situated in the Piedmont region, it is bounded to the south by North Carolina, and to the north by the Roanoke (Staunton) River. Its seat is Chatham. Pittsylvania is a rich tobacco growing area, also producing corn and timber. The independent industrial and market town of Danville lies within the county.
