Pixis, Johann Peter (1788–1874)

German pianist and composer. He lived in Paris for several years, and acquired a reputation as a gifted pianist and piano teacher.

He studied with his father, Friedrich Wilhelm Pixis (c. 1760–c. 1810), and began to appear as a pianist with his brother Friedrich Wilhelm Pixis (1786–1842), a violinist. He settled in Munich in 1809 and in Paris in 1823, where he became a noted piano teacher. In 1845, he bought a villa at Baden-Baden and continued to train pupils there. He adopted and trained the singer Franzilla Göhringer (born 1816); she created the title role in Pacini's opera Saffo in 1840.
