Pizzi, Pier Luigi (1930- )

Italian stage director and designer. He studied at the Milan Polytechnic, and designed Don Giovanni at Genoa, in 1952. He has designed and produced Handel's Orlando (Florence 1959) and Rinaldo (Madrid and Lisbon), Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie and Castor et Pollux (Aix, 1983 and 1991), and Gluck's Alceste for La Scala, Milan (1987). In 1984 he directed Bellini's Capuleti e i Montecchi at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and in 1990 he directed Les Troyens for the opening of the Opéra Bastille, Paris. His Rossini productions at Pesaro included Tancredi (1991). He directed the first modern revival of Traetta's Buova d'Antona, at Venice (1993). He was valued for the artistic and historical truth of his designs and productions.
