Community in North Elba township, northeastern New York State, in the Adirondack Mountains, at the southern end of Lake Placid, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Plattsburgh; population (1990) 2,500. A famous winter resort, it was the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. It is also a popular summer resort.

Founded in 1849, it was the site of the exclusive Lake Placid Club, established as a sports club by Melvil Dewey in 1895. It is surrounded by Adirondack Park and set at an altitude of 569 m/1,864 ft. The John Brown Farm State Historic Site to the south marks the home and grave of the abolitionist.

It has downhill (at nearby Whiteface Mountain) and cross-country ski trails, a bobsleigh run, and other sports facilities. The Olympic Centre, a multipurpose site with four ice rinks built for the 1980 games, is in Lake Placid. To the southeast is the Olympic Jumping Complex, the training area for US and Canadian Olympic teams and the site of international competitions.
