Plainfield

Town in Hendricks County, central Indiana, USA, 23 km/14 mi southwest of central Indianapolis; population (1990) 10,400. Situated on an interstate highway, it has some light industry but is primarily a residential suburb of Indianapolis.

Town in Union County, northeastern New Jersey, USA, 16 km/10 mi north of New Brunswick; population (1990) 46,600. It is an industrial and residential suburb, with a large medical centre. Manufactured products including printing equipment, electronic and automotive components, chemicals, tools, housewares, and clothing. The town holds an annual arts festival and has a symphony orchestra. It was settled by Quakers in 1684 as Milltown.

Plainfield became a centre of activity during the American Revolution; the Drake House (1746) was George Washington's headquarters and a fort stood on the present site of Cedar Brook Park.

Town in Washington County, northern-central Vermont, USA, on the Winooski River, 13 km/8 mi east of Montpelier; population (1990) 1,300. Educational and cultural establishments include Goddard College (1938) and an artists' community.
