Plano

Town in Kendall County, northeastern Illinois, USA, near the Fox River, 29 km/18 mi southwest of Aurora; population (1990) 5,100. An agricultural market centre, it also manufactures hardware and plastic goods. Plano was settled by Norwegian colonists. It lies 2 km/1 mi northeast of Maramech Hill, the site of a 1730 skirmish between American Indian Fox peoples and the French. Silver Springs State Park is situated just south of the town.

City in Collin and Denton counties, northeastern Texas, USA, 27 km/17 mi northeast of downtown Dallas; population (1990) 128,700. It manufactures communications equipment, snack foods, metals, printed materials, and brass products, and has growing medical and financial sectors. Settled in 1845, Plano remained agricultural for a century, growing cotton and raising cattle. After 1960, when its population was just under 4,000, it boomed with the suburbanization of Dallas.
