Plaquemine

Seat of Iberville Parish, southeastern Louisiana, USA, on the west bank of the Mississippi River, 14 km/9 mi southwest of Baton Rouge; population (1990) 7,200. It is situated in an oil producing region, and has processing facilities for sugar, lumber, moss, and fish. Before the American Civil War and for the period 1909–61, after the construction of locks, it was the point at which Plaquemine Bayou served as a distributary for the Mississippi. Port Allen, across from Baton Rouge, has now replaced this function.
