Plaquemines Parish

Plaquemines Parish

County of southeastern Louisiana, USA; area 2,700 sq km/1,035 sq mi; population (1990) 25,600. Its seat is Pointe à la Hache. It occupies most of the delta of the Mississippi River below New Orleans, and consists mainly of swampland crossed by bayous. At its southern end are islands separated from the mainland by the channels of the Mississippi, through which the river finally enters the Gulf of Mexico. Plaquemines Parish is partly suburban, with mixed agriculture and fishing industries, and gas, oil, and sulphur extraction. It contains several wildlife areas.
