Platée

Comédie-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau (libretto by J Autreau and A J V d'Orville), produced at Versailles, at court, on 31 March 1745. Its first Paris performance was at the Opéra on 4 February 1749. In the story, Jupiter decides to cure Juno's constant jealousy: he woos the ugly but vain marsh-nymph Plataea, knowing that when Juno discovers Jupiter's new lover is ugly, she will realize how groundless her jealousy is. Juno appears just in time to stop the wedding, to Plataea's rage.
