Platteville

Town in Grant County, southwestern Wisconsin, USA, 97 km/60 mi southeast of Madison; population (1990) 9,700. It is a market centre for the surrounding dairy farming region, with processing facilities for cheese and other dairy products, and machine shops. Education establishments include a campus of the University of Wisconsin (1866). Platteville was founded in 1827 as a lead mining town, and some zinc and lead mines remain in the area.
