Playford

Industrial city in South Australia, 27 km/17 mi north of Adelaide, formed in May 1997 when the town of Elizabeth was amalgamated with the city of Munno Para; joint population of Elizabeth and Munno Para (1996) 57,852. Playford covers a region of 346 sq km/134 sq mi with both urban and rural areas; it has retail, commercial, and industrial economic activities, and farming and horticulture are also important.

The city centre is still known as Elizabeth City Centre and is the major focus for retailing in the northern region. It is expected to be among the 10 largest in Australia on completion of a major programme of redevelopment which began in 1998.
