Pleasanton| City in Alameda County, northern-central California, USA, at the western end of the Livermore Valley, 35 km/22 mi southeast of Oakland; population (1990) 50,600. It is situated in an area of vineyards, dairy farms, and quarries. Pleasanton has grown rapidly since the 1960s, and has publishing, computer, and high-tech industries, research companies, and residential and retail developments. The Alameda County fairgrounds are located in the city. |
Pleasanton| Town in Linn County, eastern Kansas, USA, near the Missouri border, just south of the Marais des Cygnes River, and 35 km/22 mi north of Fort Scott; population (1990) 1,200. It is a commercial centre in a farming region. Significant deposits of lead and zinc have been exploited in the area. On 25 October 1864 the battle of Mine Creek took place to the south, in which Federal troops defeated Confederate raiders; it was the last Civil War action in Kansas. |
