Pleven

Industrial city (textiles, machinery, ceramics) in northern Bulgaria; population (2001) 122,100. In the Russo-Turkish War 1877, Pleven surrendered to the Russians after a siege of five months.

The story--written by David Goodwin--reported that a British couple had decided to return to the UK after they were savagely attacked in their home near Pleven on August 7 by a gang of machete-wielding thugs who also slaughtered their dogs.
