Ploieşti

Industrial city (textiles, paper, petrochemicals; oil centre) in southeastern Romania; population (2002) 232,500.

In World War II it was in the centre of the Romanian oilfields and an important source of fuel for the German army but was too far from Allied airfields to be attacked until August 1943 when it was severely damaged by a force of 177 US Liberator bombers. In April 1944 it became possible to mount bombing attacks on the area from Allied airfields in Italy and Ploieşti was finally captured by Soviet troops August 1944.
